Easy ClassDojo Classroom Economy
I love using ClassDojo for my classroom economy because I'm always on ClassDojo. I just love the motivation that technology brings to the classroom.
But to make the kiddos learn about coins, multiplication, saving and spending, and so much more, I had them convert their points to money each morning.
Now this could take a lot of time as a teacher, but you'll notice a student that is just getting the hang of money and use them as the "banker"!
What the students would do is come up to my desk in the morning, grab a white board, and write their points in $ and cents. (ex. 16pts, $0.16, 16¢)
Then I would ask, "how do you make that amount?"
They would then reply using the anchor chart I made for them, how they would like to make the amount (ex. "one dime, one nickel, and one penny please").
I would give them their coins (or in my case, beads) and they would keep these safe in their "wallet" (ziplock bag) and bring them out on store day!
Now I don't love the idea of printing paper coins, not do I have that much play money, so what I used is beads, and corresponded them to each equal a certain coin.
In my classroom I saw incredible growth in their addition and skip counting skills thanks to working with money every single day! Also, students are always learning the the economy state standard throughout the year and building life skills while they have to use their coins to purchase classroom prizes.
I also let students sell things they made to encourage them to try and earn money in different ways which let them begin to learn how to price items to meet the needs of consumers!
I just loved the pros that I saw in my classroom with this simple system. But I would love to hear other ways you all may be using economy systems in your own classroom!
